NETHERLANDS

Other Dutch seals will be found under Indonesia and #2 below seems to have been used in both the.
Netherlands and in the Dutch East Indies, now Indonesia.

Updates. The above was written by Steve Hiscocks.
There are a lot of very similar seals. I will try to re-organise
and re-order in a way that makes it easier to distinguish them.
I am using 'RH' (Revised Hiscocks) numbers to avoid confusion.
No pricing as yet.
There is a useful source of information at : PostHistorie.nl

'RIJKSTELEGRAAF' only.

Round and red.

Scalloped.

The embossing is hard to see, but it is a mistake to assume that they are all the same.

Rectangular, blue.

As I have with Belgium, I will also list the number of 'bumps along the top' [BaT] for ease of comparison.
For some the vertical and horizontal scalloping is independent so there are parts of two scallops at each corner. For others they are unified so that just one scallop surrounds each corner.
I will refer to those as "Unified" and mark them with the letter "U".

These 3 are very similar. The first is an image from Steve Hiscocks' book that I have been trying to match,
The other two are similar but with differences to the Cable and spacing of lightning-bolts on the ends of them. They are also a millimetre bigger.

Without cable end-plates, more like 5 turns on cable, straight-legged 'R's.

This is an interesting item.

Trial ?
This has straight-legged 'R's but is distinctive in having 2 turns of cable against the left cable end-plate.
It has no scalloping and an outer line suggesting that it was never intended to.
It is embossed, though the depth of embossing is very uneven across the seal.
The broken lettering and thunderbolt is also unusual. Size 38mm measured as the ones above.
The colour is closer to the ones below, in fact almost the negative of the ones above. This has no gum.
Perhaps this was an unadopted trial that was rejected in favour of the types below.

Extra or different lettering   (Also used in Netherland Indies.)

Type RD1 Type RD1 Type RD1

Government PTT   These differ from the last with a wide gap after "EN" and the crown and shield-embossing.
Similar (if not identical) types to these are listed as 1921-29 under Indonesia.
These two differ in Scallop-size and position of lettering on the right, relative to the shield.
Hiscocks listed this as 1920, but similar examples
that I have from Indonesia are dated 1938 and 1939,
with the Government types dated 1921-29
