The history of Norway is reflected in the three very similar designs of telegraph seals used.
Norway was in a union with Sweden from 1814 to 1905. At that time Norway became independent from Sweden, though giving their crown to the Prince of Denmark.
The first telegraph line began operating in 1855, a year after the first railroad between Christiania (later Oslo) and Eidsvoll opened.
Updates. I have updated a couple of images, added a few and re-ordered things using 'RH' (Revised Hiscocks) numbers to avoid confusion. Norway used seals for anti-TB purposes just as Sweden did. Germany occupied Norway between 1940 and 1945. No pricing as yet. |

Hiscocks added the following note:
Note. No.3 [now H10] recently appeared on an eBay auction but I was not able to examine it and I can only assume that it really is black and is not just a black and white illustration of a red or orange seal. |
Black was used on the death of a Monarch.
From type 9 to type 10 looks like just a change in the wording. type 10a is mostly re-drawn, the lions and thunderbolts on the left being most noticeable.
The 1939 image is poor but looks like the only difference may be the colour, though that may be simply due to a poor image.

#19, 31.4mm (28 scallops) Swedish Arms |
I know it has the Swedish Arms, but Norway used that until 1905, and this does not look Swedish.
It could even be Danish, though it translates better as Norwegian or Swedish.
Either way it may well be simply an etiquette. Information needed.

The single seal below appeared on the internet in 2006 but the date of use and size are not known.
It seems to be rare.
Updates. The above was written by Steve Hiscocks. So far I have only converted this to HTML. No pricing as yet. |
